A couple of weeks ago, as Sanjay Govil made his way to a patch of land in Frederick, Maryland, for the bhoomi pujan of Washington Freedom's long-awaited cricket stadium, the heavens opened. It poured throughout the drive, threatening to dampen what was meant to be an auspicious occasion. But just as the prayers began, the rain relented and the sun emerged.
On Friday, October 16, the weather appeared to oblige him once again. After a chilly week in the Washington DC region, the mercury climbed to an unseasonably warm 84 degrees Fahrenheit, with glorious sunshine greeting Govil and a gathering of elected officials, community leaders and cricket enthusiasts assembled to break ground on Freedom's proposed 10,000-capacity home in Frederick, about an hour's drive from Washington DC.
Govil, who grew up with the Indian belief that rain before an auspicious occasion is a blessing, could scarcely resist reading into the coincidence. "Just like today the sun is shining. It's 84 degrees in October, like a summer day in mid-October in DC," chuckled Govil, recalling the earlier ceremony. "It was cold all week and it's going to be cold starting tomorrow. And then the sun came out that day as well. Gods are smiling at us!"
