Lancashire end 25-year association with James Anderson

James Anderson will not play for Lancashire again after the county decided against extending his contract, ending a 25-year association. Anderson, 44, said on Sunday (October 25) that the decision was not his, but made no mention of retirement.

"I've supported Lancashire since I was [a] kid, and so to get to play for them for 25 years was a dream come true," Anderson wrote on Instagram. "I have always found it special walking out to play at Old Trafford and have some incredible memories of doing so including the honour of being captain - if it was up to me it wouldn't have ended like this, but I wish the players and fans all the best for the future."

Lancashire said in a statement that Anderson's "playing career with the Club will come to an end at the conclusion of his current contract." He was told of the decision at a meeting at Emirates Old Trafford on October 19 with Paul Farbrace, the club's incoming director of cricket, and Richard Kenyon, its chief executive.

Farbrace explained the move as part of a broader rebuild at a club now in Division Two of the County Championship.
