Magwizi Reveals How ZIFA Secured Conditional Return of Fans to NSS
ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi has revealed how engagement with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), government support and improved security arrangements helped Zimbabwe secure conditional approval for supporters to return to the National Sports Stadium (NSS).
Zimbabwean football has received a significant boost after CAF granted exceptional permission for a limited number of spectators to attend two upcoming international fixtures at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.
The decision follows a provisional restriction on spectators after crowd disturbances during Zimbabwe’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against the Democratic Republic of Congo, an incident that resulted in the death of a supporter.
According to reports, ZIFA stepped up its engagement with CAF in an effort to address the concerns surrounding stadium safety and restore supporters’ access to international football matches on home soil. <Cite refs={["turn491222search2","turn491222search3"]}/>
Magwizi Leads Engagement with CAF
Magwizi’s discussions with CAF officials formed part of broader efforts to resolve the situation and strengthen security procedures at the stadium.
The ZIFA president acknowledged the importance of addressing the concerns raised by the continental governing body, particularly regarding crowd management, access control and emergency response.
The association also worked with the Government of Zimbabwe, whose guarantees and support for improved security arrangements contributed to securing the conditional approval.
The development represents an important step for Zimbabwean football, which has been working to restore normal conditions for hosting international matches.
CAF Limits Attendance to 10,000 Supporters
Under the conditions announced by ZIFA, a maximum of 10,000 spectators will be permitted to attend each of the two authorised fixtures.
The approval covers Zimbabwe’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament qualifier against Malawi on 13 October 2026 and Scottland FC’s CAF Champions League match against Angola’s Atlético Petróleos de Luanda, provisionally scheduled for 17 October 2026.
The authorisation applies exclusively to these fixtures and does not represent unrestricted permission for spectators to attend future matches at the stadium. <Cite refs={["turn491222search3","turn491222search4"]}/>
Strict Security Measures Introduced
As part of the agreement, stadium gates will open five hours before kick-off to allow supporters sufficient time to arrive, undergo security screening and enter the venue in an orderly manner.
Spectators will be restricted to designated and approved areas, while attendance will be strictly controlled to ensure that the 10,000-person limit is not exceeded.
Additional measures will cover security deployment, crowd management, medical services and emergency response. A CAF safety and security officer will also monitor the implementation of the arrangements.
ZIFA has warned that violence, hooliganism, vandalism, intimidation and forced entry will not be tolerated. Supporters who violate the regulations risk being denied entry, removed from the stadium or banned from attending future matches. <Cite refs={["turn491222search4","turn491222search7"]}/>
Zimbabwe Must Demonstrate Improved Stadium Safety
The conditional return of supporters places significant responsibility on ZIFA, stadium authorities and football fans to ensure that the upcoming matches take place without further incidents.
CAF’s assessment of the security arrangements and their implementation during the two fixtures will help determine whether spectators can be permitted to attend future matches at the National Sports Stadium.
For Zimbabwean football, the opportunity represents more than the return of fans to the stands. It is also a test of the country’s ability to provide a safe environment for players, officials and supporters.
ZIFA has urged fans to cooperate with security personnel, arrive early and respect the stadium regulations to protect the progress made in securing CAF’s approval.
A Major Step for Zimbabwean Football
The conditional reopening of the National Sports Stadium offers renewed hope to supporters eager to watch their national teams and clubs compete at home.
However, maintaining that opportunity will depend on compliance with CAF’s requirements and the successful implementation of improved safety procedures.
For Magwizi and ZIFA, the immediate priority is to ensure that the authorised matches proceed safely and demonstrate that Zimbabwe is capable of hosting international football under the required standards.
