Zimbabwe’s young athletes made an impressive start at the Southern Africa Championships in Mauritius, collecting five gold medals and several other podium finishes to lead the standings after the opening day.

Team Zimbabwe delivered a memorable performance on the opening day of the Southern Africa Confederation of Athletics (SACA) Under-18 and Under-20 Championships, showcasing the country’s emerging athletics talent across track and field events.

The Zimbabwean team secured victories in several disciplines, including sprinting, long jump, middle-distance running and relay competition, establishing an early lead in the medal standings.

The results highlighted the potential of Zimbabwe’s young athletes as they competed against some of the region’s strongest emerging talents.

Nyamukondiwa Opens Zimbabwe’s Gold Medal Account

Tanatswa Nyamukondiwa gave Zimbabwe an excellent start by winning the Under-18 boys’ 100m final, securing the team’s first gold medal of the championships.

His victory provided an early boost for the Zimbabwean contingent and set the tone for a successful opening day.

Zimbabwe continued its strong showing in the field events, where Panashe Mutenure won gold in the Under-20 men’s long jump with an impressive leap of 7.28 metres.

Teammate Takunda Mutizwa completed a one-two finish for Zimbabwe after recording 7.08m to claim the silver medal.

The result demonstrated Zimbabwe’s strength in the jumping events and added valuable points to the country’s medal tally.

Nyahuma and Chimunya Deliver Gold Medals

Anesu Nyahuma produced another outstanding performance by winning the Under-20 women’s 400m in 55.79 seconds.

Her victory added to Zimbabwe’s growing collection of gold medals and underlined the country’s competitiveness in the longer sprint events.

Trey Chimunya also enjoyed a memorable outing in the Under-20 men’s 100m final, clocking 10.36 seconds to take gold.

The performance was particularly significant because it secured his qualification for the upcoming World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Chimunya’s achievement represents an important opportunity to test himself against leading junior sprinters from around the world.

Zimbabwe Adds Silver Medals on the Track

Zimbabwe’s success was not limited to gold medals, with several athletes producing strong performances to finish on the podium.

Martha Chipuriro claimed silver in the Under-20 women’s 1500m, while Tanatswa Chakonda secured second place in the Under-18 boys’ 110m hurdles with a time of 14.07 seconds.

Nenyasha Chihora also won silver in the Under-20 men’s 400m, adding another medal to Zimbabwe’s impressive opening-day performance.

These results demonstrated the depth of talent within the team, with athletes competing strongly across different age groups and disciplines.

Mixed Relay Team Completes Memorable Day

Zimbabwe concluded its successful opening day by winning gold in the Under-20 mixed 4x400m relay.

The quartet of Nataly Shoko, Emmanuel Uriga, Anesu Nyahuma and Nenyasha Chihora combined effectively to secure another victory for the country.

The relay triumph provided a fitting conclusion to a day in which Zimbabwean athletes demonstrated speed, determination and teamwork.

Relay events often require precise exchanges and coordinated performances, making the gold medal an important achievement for the team.

Zimbabwe Faces Strong Regional Competition

The SACA Championships brought together young athletes from across Southern Africa to compete for regional honours and gain valuable international experience.

For Zimbabwe, the competition provided an opportunity to assess its developing talent against athletes from neighbouring countries while preparing promising competitors for future continental and global championships.

The opening-day results placed Zimbabwe at the top of the standings, although the competition remained far from over.

Athletes were expected to return for the second day of competition in events including the 200m, 400m hurdles and several field disciplines.

Final Standings Confirm Zimbabwe’s Strong Campaign

Despite its impressive start, Zimbabwe eventually finished third overall in the championships, with 19 medals comprising seven gold, nine silver and three bronze.

Botswana finished first with 20 medals, including 10 gold, while hosts Mauritius secured second place with 32 medals.

Although Zimbabwe did not retain the lead through the end of the competition, the team’s overall performance represented a significant achievement for its young athletes.

The championships offered valuable experience and highlighted several promising prospects who could contribute to Zimbabwean athletics in the coming years.
